Chad Schexnayder Named Chair of the Fidelity & Surety Law Committee of the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section
PHOENIX (August 24, 2020) – Chad Schexnayder, a partner at Jennings, Haug & Cunningham, is the new chair of the Fidelity & Surety Law Committee (FSLC), of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS). Mr. Schexnayder’s appointment will extend through July of 2021. During his tenure as chair, he will collaborate with industry colleagues throughout the country to produce national conferences and publications, enhance communications among industry peers and promote the professional development of FSLC’s membership.
The FSLC, founded in 1933, is widely recognized as the industry’s pre-eminent organization. It is dedicated to the development, study of, and expertise in practice and improvement of the application of justice relating to fidelity and surety matters. Its membership works throughout the country and internationally. The FSLC is comprised of attorneys practicing surety and fidelity law, claims and underwriting professionals from surety and fidelity companies, as well as engineers, accountants and other consulting professionals who support the operations of the industry.
Mr. Schexnayder has been a member of the American Bar Association for more than three decades, the past 25 of which he has actively served in a variety of roles, including presenter, moderator and program chair at dozens of conferences across the nation. As both an author and editor, he has contributed to some of the ABA’s most successful and widely utilized legal reference manuals and publications. Mr. Schexnayder is regarded in the industry as a leading authority on bankruptcy, construction law, complex surety bond disputes, as well as other surety and fidelity matters.
For the past three years, he has moved through a line of succession toward his role as chair. The process has allowed him to consult with his predecessors, formulate a vision for his term and develop plans for several large-scale national programs. The current pandemic has added an unanticipated level of complexity to the position and his responsibilities.
“In a ‘normal’ year, most of our member events and educational programs would already be ‘in the can,’ and we would have the luxury of simply watching them unfold,” said Schexnayder. “To say things will be different this year is a monumental understatement. We’ve had to make swift and sometimes painful adjustments, but I’m fortunate to have a resourceful team of colleagues who are helping redefine what the next year will look like. We are better utilizing social media and distributing important educational content through new digital channels. I have every confidence we will fulfill and preserve the FSLC mission.”
Mr. Schexnayder is not the first JHC partner to serve as chair of the ABA’s Fidelity & Surety Law Committee. He follows the footsteps of William F. Haug, who served as FSLC’s chair in 1983-1984. In 2005, on behalf of the Committee, Mr. Schexnayder had the honor of presenting Mr. Haug with the Martin J. Andrews Award for Lifetime Achievement in Surety and Fidelity Law.
